Sustainable Sophistication

Sustainable Sophistication
Our client engaged us and the NextHaus Alliance to envision a beautifully modern, sustainable residence defined by abundant natural light and a seamless connection between indoors and out.
Designed to the rigorous standards of PHIUS (Passive House Institute U.S.), this amazing, award-winning home represents the first certified Passive House in Evanston. Set within a historic district, the home also met the Evanston Preservation Commission’s requirement to harmonize with its more traditional neighbors.
The key to the project’s success was a deeply collaborative process—every element was thoughtfully developed through close partnership across all parties- the client, our team and Nexthaus Alliance.
Every finish and feature were chosen with care- sustainability always top of mind- but without compromising luxury or design integrity. Highlights include Valcucine kitchen cabinetry crafted from recycled materials, a vapor fireplace, exterior siding made from coal fly-ash waste, sustainably harvested wood flooring, and a roof composed of recycled metal. Passive elements—such as a carefully engineered light shelf in the family room—work to naturally illuminate and regulate the interior, significantly reducing energy demand.
Throughout, we emphasized natural, non-toxic materials and locally sourced, storied pieces—including a vintage Asian screen custom-fitted within an LED-lit niche to serve as a striking focal point. We intentionally avoided conventional wallcoverings due to harmful adhesives and opted for a selected recycled tile for its durability, texture, and environmental responsibility.
Though rooted in a neighborhood steeped in tradition, this home stands as a testament to the evolving language of sustainable luxury: one that is refined, resilient, and deeply respectful of both place and planet.
